Primarily a painter, I also construct pieces using textiles, paper and found objects.
Much of what I do has evolved out of my interest in both historic and genealogical research. This means that I may revisit a series of works over a number of years as research progresses.
Layering, distortion and erasure have all come to play a key part in my practice, referencing the often fugitive nature of both memory and historic narrative.  Delving into the past is frequently concerned with revealing aspects of the misplaced, the intangible, the forgotten or perhaps the deliberately erased.

Works

Annie Ward’s practice encompasses two distinct ways of making: painting and sculptural constructions using paper and altered books.
She slips effortlessly between her two areas of expertise finding that they feed off each other. Both her painting and her 3D work are informed by personal memory, history and texts that she has read. In fact she uses text extensively in her objects.
She addresses the historic role of women as homemakers, widely in her work, recognising her position in a long line of daughters, mothers and grandmothers handing on advice, wisdom and ways of doing things and subtly observing how little has really changed. © Fiona Robinson
